Home Security Upgrades in Liverpool

A security upgrade should fix real weak points — not generate a long invoice. Most Liverpool homes need two or three changes, not ten. The job starts with a proper look at the property and ends with the changes that actually make a difference. If everything's already up to standard, you'll be told that too.

What Actually Improves Security

The Upgrades Worth Doing — In Order of Impact

Most break-ins happen through the front or back door. The upgrades that matter are the ones that address those entry points — in rough order of how much each one changes things.

🔐

TS007 3-Star Anti-Snap Cylinder

The single most impactful upgrade for any UPVC or composite door. Standard euro cylinders snap in under 60 seconds with no skill and no noise. A TS007 cylinder breaks at a sacrificial point that leaves the lock intact. Required on all new housing under Secured by Design.

🔒

BS3621 5-Lever Mortice Deadlock

The insurance-standard lock for wooden front doors. Most home insurance policies name it specifically. Replaces older 3-lever mortice locks — which offer minimal forced-entry resistance — and unbranded 5-lever versions that don't carry the kitemark.

🔩

London Bar & Frame Reinforcement

Steel plates fitted to the frame behind the lock and hinge sides of wooden doors. They spread the force of a kick across the full frame instead of concentrating it on the fixing screws. Inexpensive and very effective — one of the cheapest improvements with real impact.

Door reinforcement →
⚙️

Hinge Bolts

Steel pins set into the hinge edge of the door that engage the frame when the door is closed. Even if the hinges are removed — or the hinge pins pushed out — the door stays attached. Fitted to any door where the hinge side is exposed.

Key-Locking Window Handles

Most ground-floor windows use basic spring catches that open in seconds from outside if left on the latch. Key-locking handles remove that option entirely. Low cost, immediate effect, and often required by insurers on any accessible window.

Restricted-Key Cylinders

Where uncontrolled key copying is the problem — HMOs, properties with regular tradespeople, houses with complex access histories. Keys can only be cut against a signed authorisation form held with the original supplier. No hardware shop copies possible.

Master key systems →
What doesn't actually improve your security — even though it gets sold as essential. Dummy CCTV cameras (experienced burglars recognise them). Generic 'anti-pick' pins added to a snappable cylinder (the snap attack bypasses the pins entirely). Decorative reinforcement plates bolted to the surface with no structural backing. Security stickers and warning signs. Replacing locks that already meet current standards. If a locksmith tells you to replace fully compliant, working locks — they're selling, not advising. The Which? home security guide covers this in detail.

How an Assessment Works

The Order of the Visit

1

Outside First

Walk round the full property — front, back, side gate, garage, and any outbuildings. Check every external entry point: which way each door opens, what the lock looks like, whether hinges are exposed, what the frame condition is.

2

Every Door Opened and Checked

Each external door opened and inspected from both sides. Cylinder type identified (snap-resistant or not), mortice lock checked for standard, hinges examined, frame assessed at the lock and hinge sides.

3

Ground-Floor Windows

Every accessible window checked — handle type, whether it's key-locking, whether the locking mechanism is working. Often the quickest part of the visit and sometimes the most surprising.

4

Findings Discussed Honestly

Walk through everything found: what's a genuine concern, what could be improved, and what's already fine. No pressure, no upsell. If the honest answer is 'change these two cylinders and you're done', that's what you're told.

5

Quote and Upgrade if You Want

Fixed total price for any upgrades identified. Most can be done immediately on the same visit. Or scheduled for another day — entirely your choice. No deposit, no commitment to proceed.

Recent Upgrades

Recent Security Upgrade Jobs Across Liverpool

A selection of recent assessment and upgrade visits — what was found and what changed.

🔐 Anti-Snap Upgrade

Insurance renewal prompted upgrade, Allerton L18

Homeowner's insurer flagged non-compliant cylinders at renewal. Front and back UPVC doors both had original builder-grade euro cylinders from 2008. Both replaced with TS007 3-star anti-snap. Insurance confirmed compliance, premium reduced at next renewal.

🔒 Full Assessment

New buyer assessment, Aigburth L17

Full assessment on purchase of a Victorian terrace. Front door: BS3621 mortice already fitted, night latch not deadlocking — replaced. Back door: 3-lever mortice — replaced with BS3621. Ground floor windows: 3 of 4 had no key-locking — all fitted. Two hours total.

🔩 Frame Reinforcement

Post-burglary upgrade, Walton L9

Following a break-in via a kicked front door (see burglary repairs). After repair: London bar fitted to frame, BS3621 mortice and deadlocking night latch both upgraded. Hinge bolts added. Door now resists the same attack method that caused the original break-in.

🗝️ Restricted Keys

HMO key control, Wavertree L15

6-bed HMO with uncontrolled key history across multiple tenancies. Full cylinder replacement with restricted-profile keys throughout. Authorisation form system established. Landlord now controls who can get copies cut — impossible under previous setup.

🔐 Insurance Compliance

Landlord portfolio upgrade, Bootle L20

Landlord with 4 properties — insurer required TS007 cylinders on all UPVC doors. All four properties done in sequence in one day. 8 cylinders total. Itemised invoice per property for insurance records.

🪟 Window Security

Ground-floor windows, Woolton L25

Assessment found 6 ground-floor windows all on basic spring catches — no key-locking. Two had been left on the latch overnight as a habit. Key-locking handles fitted throughout. Simple upgrade, significant change to the exposure.

Security Upgrade FAQs

Questions People Ask Before Booking

Honest answers to the most common security upgrade questions.

Got a question not listed here?

07749 321303 Full FAQ Page →
Do you charge for the assessment if I decide not to do any work? +
For standard domestic security assessments, no charge if you don't proceed with any work. The assessment is how we identify what's needed — if the honest answer is 'nothing', you're not invoiced for the visit. Commercial assessments covering larger premises are discussed separately.
How do I know what my insurance actually requires? +
Ring your insurer and ask directly — they'll tell you what minimum lock standards your policy requires. The two phrases to ask about are BS3621 (for mortice locks on wooden doors) and TS007 or '3-star anti-snap' (for euro cylinders on UPVC and composite doors). Alternatively, dig out your policy schedule — the requirements are usually in the security conditions section.
Will upgrading my locks actually reduce my insurance premium? +
Sometimes yes. Some insurers offer reduced premiums for security upgrades, particularly fitting BS3621 mortice locks or TS007 cylinders. Worth ringing your insurer after the upgrade with the receipt and asking whether it affects the premium. Keep the invoice — it's proof of compliance if you ever claim.
My house already has a 5-lever mortice — does that mean I'm compliant? +
Not necessarily. Not all 5-lever mortice locks are BS3621 — the standard adds specific resistance tests beyond just the number of levers. The kitemark (a small padlock symbol) on the faceplate of the lock confirms BS3621. If there's no kitemark, it's likely not compliant with most insurance policies, even if it's a 5-lever.
What about smart locks — are they worth including in an upgrade? +
Depends entirely on the use case. For short-let properties, holiday homes, or HMOs with high turnover, smart locks earn their keep. For a standard family home where keys aren't a problem, the added complexity isn't earning anything. The honest answer varies by situation — see the smart lock installation page for the full breakdown.
Do you upgrade security on rental properties? +
Yes — this is a significant part of the work. Between-tenancy upgrades, HMO compliance, insurance-required improvements across portfolios. Invoicing direct to the landlord or managing agent. Multiple properties can be done in sequence on the same day. See the landlord locksmith page for the wider picture.
Will the upgrades change what my door looks like? +
Cylinder upgrades — almost invisible. The new cylinder sits in the same position as the old one. Most anti-snap cylinders have a slightly shorter protruding section than the original, which is actually better. Mortice locks are internal — no visible change from outside. London bars are surface-mounted on the inside of the door frame, not visible from outside. Window handles are a like-for-like change in the same position.
Is there anything you check that I can do myself before you arrive? +
Yes — pull out the policy schedule for your home insurance and look for the security conditions section. Note what lock standards they specify. Then check whether the current cylinder on your UPVC door has any markings indicating TS007 or 3-star. If it doesn't say anything, it's probably original-equipment grade and worth replacing regardless.

Home Security Upgrades Across Liverpool and the North West

Cobra Locksmith Services carries out home security assessments and upgrades across Liverpool, Merseyside, and Cheshire — from Victorian terraces in Toxteth and Kensington to suburban semis in Allerton and new-build estates in Speke. Assessments cover every external entry point: cylinders, mortice locks, frame reinforcement, hinge security, and window handles. No commission relationships with any hardware brand — the advice is independent.

All cylinders fitted are TS007 3-star anti-snap, meeting Secured by Design requirements. All mortice locks are BS3621. Frame reinforcement and hinge bolts are structural, not decorative. Where insurance compliance is the driver, documentation is provided in the format insurers accept. For properties with specific access control requirements, see landlord locksmith and access control. Burglary repair visits include a security assessment as standard — the same visit that fixes the damage also closes the gap that caused it.
